Literacy: Pi Beta Phi's National Philanthropy

Since 1912, Pi Beta Phi Fraternity has been committed to literacy and education.

Why Literacy?
  • People who can read tend to be more successful and have more earning capacity.
  • Literate parents set their children up for successful and healthy lives.
  • Illiteracy is a factor in the rate of homelessness, domestic abuse, poverty, and lack of healthcare.
  • Illiteracy negatively affects the quality of life for individuals and their families!

Arrowmont Scpiphi3hool of Arts and Crafts began in 1912 as a Settlement School and brought education, economic development, and health care to rural Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Pi Phis were instrumental in promoting the academic and industrial enrichment of area children. Today Arrowmont is an internationally known visual arts complex, boasting a renowned faculty and international student body.

Arrow in the Arctic, Pi Phi's Canadian philanthpiphi2ropy, provides support for the many branches of the library systems in Whitehorse, Yukon, and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. While the Canadian government supplies an adequate budget for the purchase of basic books, there is little available for extras. Items purchased by the Arrow in the Arctic funds are often circulated among branch and community libraries.

Literacy in Lexington

The Virginia Theta chapter of Pi Beta Phi participates in several events and projects throughout the year to promote literacy in local areas. Most notably, Pi Phi has partnered with Phi Beta Sigma to host Dance-A-Thon, an annual event whose proceeds go to March of Dimes (Phi Beta Sigma's philanthropy) and local literacy projects.
